Amsterdams Cannabis Cup 2011 Raided!

When the cannabis conservatives grabbed the political wheel within the pro marijuana Netherlands this past season and then promptly closed the Cannabis coffeeshops in the southeastern part of the nation to weed vacationers, it appeared as an unfortunate setback for the marijuana tourism business.

Today however, using perfect police state logic the authorities  in Amsterdam decided to storm their way into and then raid the 24th annual H.T. Cannabis Cup event. As marijuana continues to be demonized by right wing zelots and clueless old fools in the U.S., it is still fighting the “Good” fight in NL and pushing through the process to become decriminalized within the Netherlands. Based on recent tweets received by attendees at the event … “everybody may have their cannabis buds confiscated, but nobody is going to be penalized. This was the first time the police had felt it necessary in the last 24 years at the cannabis cup to make the presence know in such a maner.

According to the Director from the Vancouver Cannabis Dispensary Society, “Officers explained they looked into yesterdays events and saw some MMJ clubs supplying weed and breaking other rules…

Really? At the HIGH TIMES CANNABIS CUP

Update 11/24/2011 2:20 am

It’s all good in the ‘dam neighborhood. The misunderstanding was in regards to a permit application filed through the venue to host the big cannabis event. H.T.’s U.S. and Netherlander lawyers have just finished looking at all of them with law enforcement there. No participants have been arrested and participants aren’t the targets from the police presence. Information making certain that suppliers have been in compliance using the 500 gram limit underneath the Opium Law for licensed suppliers in the venue. Just one vendor continues to be recognized as potentially over the limit and only slightly.

Supreme Court To Decide Long Beach Marijuana Question

As cannabis clubs take presctiption… and hold on tight in the Bay Area  the City awaits word on if the Top Court will uphold a ruling that may alter the relationship between medical cannabis shops and cities.

A court ruling in Long Beach stated the Los Angeles city had authority to limit where medical cannabis shops setup, but could not issue permits or legal permission. That decision might have state-wide implications, and that’s why L.B. is suppressing new permits, stated Jack Song, deputy press secretary for City Attorney Dennis Herrera.

“We actually want to see exactly what the Top Court decides,” Song stated. “It provides much more of a definition and guidance to cities coping with medical-marijuana shops.”

A minimum of 11 prospective medical marijuana shops have been in various stages from the enabling process using the City, stated Stephanie Tucker, a speaker for that Bay Area Medical Cannabis Taskforce. Between 26 and 29 shops happen to be allowed within the City, she stated.

“The concept of holding back on certification licensed facilities when they’re prepared to be approved is detrimental and never within the welfare of cannabis patients, not to mention the higher community,” stated Kris Hermes, a spokesperson for Berkeley-based People in america for Safe Access.

The controversy falls inside the context of the bigger debate – the threat of the federal attack on cannabis clubs.

In October, U.S. lawyers in California introduced they’d try to shut lower shops, that they stated were operating in breach of federal law. Melinda Haag, U.S. attorney for Northern Calfornia, stated at that time she’d focus her enforcement efforts on pot clubs near schools or parks.

Although The City has stated it will not problem new permits for the moment, the threat by federal prosecutors to hack lower on pot clubs hasn’t discouraged some farmers from seeking a store.

“It’s clearly a hard business

decision,” stated Joram Altman, who signifies the La-based dispensary Sunset Organics, which really wants to open another location on Mission Street. “It’s a gamble.”

Medical Cannabis; Can it Cause Lung Disease?

A current study was done to establish the collective and independent effects of tobacco and cannabis smoking on respiratory symptoms and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) within the general population.  COPD is a progressive (which means it gets worse with time) lung disease that makes it hard to breathe.  COPD symptoms include chronic coughing, mucus production, wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness.  The leading cause of COPD is tobacco smoke.  The above mentioned study evaluated 878 people aged 40 and older and assessed their respiratory history, use of tobacco and use of marijuana. They performed lung function tests before and after using medication that opens up the lungs.

The findings: “Smoking both tobacco and marijuana synergistically increased the risk of respiratory symptoms and COPD. Smoking only marijuana was not associated with an increased risk of respiratory symptoms or COPD.”  (Tan, et al, Canadian Medical Association Journal, 4/14/09; 180)

Despite these findings, most physicians still recommend that medical marijuana patients do not smoke their medication and instead use vaporizers, edibles, and/or tinctures.  It is clear from this study that the damage that smoking tobacco can cause is significant (which we all knew before anyway!) and it can be worsened if you also smoke marijuana.
